Alternatives to Popular Hair Care Products

You love your hair but are you really looking after it? You don’t need to buy expensive hair products or ones that seem like a great thing only to be packed with harmful chemicals. Here are some natural yet effective products you can start using on your treasured tresses, plus they might make your money run further.

Argan Oil
Many people have been praising argan oil for its hair benefits, so it’s becoming more mainstream. What’s so great about it? Argan oil, which comes from Argan tree nuts, is a natural antidote to frizz and flyaway hair, helping to create a sleeker and smoother finish.

Replace your silicone products with argan oil. Although silicone also leaves your hair feeling smooth, its coating on hair prevents nutrients from reaching your locks, so it’s best to avoid it.

DIY Natural Hairspray
Using a natural hairspray is much better for your hair and overall health. Hairsprays contain chemicals that are linked to illness and can harm the environment.

To make your own natural hairspray, all you need is one lemon, two cups of water, a pot, a strainer and a spray bottle in which you will store the hairspray.

● Slice up your lemon into wedges and then put them in a pot that contains two cups of water.
● Bring it to a boil until half of the water in the pot remains.
● Let the water cool, then strain it and fill your spray bottle with it.

Tip: If you have dry hair, you should use an orange instead.

Shea Butter Hair Mousse
If you use mousse to tame your hair, bear in mind such products often contain alcohol which can damage your hair, leaving it dry and causing it to break easier. Using shea butter on your hair is much more nourishing while keeping curly hair tamed and beautiful. To make your own shea butter hair mousse, you’ll need shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil and some essential oils for a delicious fragrance. Here’s the full recipe.

Sassy Salt Spray
Instead of exposing your hair to heat styling tools and many products, such as volumizing sprays, leave your hair to air-dry and use a salt spray to create quick texture and style. Embrace your hair’s natural beauty!

For this recipe, you’ll need a spray bottle, a tablespoon of sea salt, two tablespoons of aloe vera gel, three green teabags, and four drops of an essential oil if you want fragrance.

● Let the teabags steep in boiling water and then allow the water to cool.
● Place it in a saucepan and let it boil on the stove.
● Add in the sea salt and stir well while you turn down the heat.
● Allow this mixture to cool before you bring in the essential oils and aloe vera. Stir them well.
● Pour the blend into your spray bottle.

This is a great spray to style your hair naturally or spritz when your hair looks like it needs a pick-me-up.

Get Stronger Hair by Going Sulfate-Free
An ingredient you should stay away from in shampoos and conditioners are sulfates. These create lathering action in your products but are alarmingly also found in detergents. Since they are too harsh on hair, they can strip and damage your strands. Strengthen your hair by going sulfate-free and save money by making your own shampoo with essential oils, coconut milk and liquid castille soap.

Surprisingly, sulfates can also trigger acne. Research has found that sodium lauryl sulfate, for example, causes acne pimples to sprout. The reason for this is that these chemicals are comedogenic, meaning they clog pores, which leads to breakouts.

By choosing hair care products that are healthier and more natural, you can achieve stronger, more beautiful hair that will leave people trying to guess your hair secret.
